Brunch in Style at the newly-opened Chez Antoinette, Victoria

Last weekend Ms B & I enjoyed a late brunch at the newly-opened Chez Antoinette in Victoria. Their mothership in Covent Garden, opened 5 years ago, ranks roughly 200 out of 20,000 London restaurants on Tripadvisor, with a Certificate of Excellence thrown in on top, and their new restaurant is ranking even higher. We never rely mainly on Tripadvisor, but it is the most popular platform and it gave some assurance that nearly all other reviews we found were also excellent. Co-owner Aurelia Noel-Delclos had lived in the Big Smoke for half a decade when she says she got homesick and decided to re-create her happy Lyon childhood home in her new home town. All dishes served are based on her grandmother Antoinette’s recipes or at the very least inspired by her cooking. Together with her husband Jean-Baptiste ‘JB’ Noel she now runs both restaurants and we were lucky to […]

Hostaria Osottoosopra, Venice

Friends had recommended Hostaria Osottoosopra to us and finally we were going to check this place out for a very late lunch. Tripadvisor (#26 of 1,323 Restaurants in Venice, certificate of excellence) seemed to agree with our friends’ opinion. The slightly odd-looking name is pidgeon Italian for “Below and Above,” referring to the two floors. Osottoosopra is just across the Canale Grande from Palazzina Grassi (even though a fair walking distance, unless you hop on a boat), where we had enjoyed brunch the previous day (blog post here). This is where the three neighbourhoods of San Marco, San Polo, and Dorsoduro touch. It is one of our favourite parts of Venice. Despite the physical proximity to San Marco you might find yourself walking along canals and down crooked alleyways for several minutes without spotting other human beings. Quite the opposite of super-busy San Marco. There are other quiet areas such […]

Drake Eatery, Bondi – Great place for an afternoon snack, if you’re in the area

During our recent annual visit to Sydney to catch up with friends and family we stayed at QT Bondi for a couple of days, to enjoy the beach and the coastal walks. On our first day we felt like an afternoon snack and found nearby Drake Eatery, which came highly recommended from a number of reviews we had read. We opted for two Aperol Spritz (AUD 10 each), 6 oysters (AUD 3 each), and their meat and cheese board (AUD 38 for the two of us), taking advantage of their ‘’Wine Time” from 4pm to 6pm every day.    The oysters were spot-on, the bresaola outright delicious, the bits of salami, ham and cheese very tasty too. We also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the fact that there was a light breeze cooling the air through some of the windows that had been opened.     We’ll probably be back […]

Bistro Mirey might be for you, if you love French breakfast with baked beans

UPDATE – Bistro Mirey permanently closed on 31st October 2019. We’ve just come back from a catch-up with good old friends, fellow food blogger Karen (The Veggie and I) and her husband at Bistro Mirey. Mirey is a Franco-Japanese bistro, which was opened in Fulham early last year by the professionally trained chef Gerald Mirey and former supper club originator Ko Ito. The restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside. It was empty when we arrived and slowly filled up to about one-third capacity while we were there. We liked the bright, friendly, relaxing vibes with a lot of wood. As a tall person, I have to say, that the legroom at all the tables is tiny (even though in some cases, you might be able to move the table away from the wall respectively the chairs away from the table). The service was very friendly, welcoming, and generally […]

Pimlico’s Delizie D’Italia – Great Spot for Brunch

We used to live in Pimlico (near the beautiful Vincent Square, on the other side of Vauxhall Bridge Road), and we always loved Delizie d’Italia, a tiny Italian delicatessen with a small amount of indoor and outdoor seating. It isn’t located in the best part of Pimlico, right on Lupus Street, opposite the notorious Churchill Gardens estate. But the area has gone a long way and is perfectly safe during day time. A lot of great places have opened in the area during the past decade, including, for example a vintage clothes store frequented by A-listers. The famous 1930s neo-Georgian Dolphin Square apartment complex is only a stone’s throw away. A fabulous Michelin-starred restaurant is just half a mile away towards Victoria station (our review here). From Pimlico tube station Delizie is less than five minutes’ walk.   The quality of the service very much depends on the mood of […]
