Wright Bros Battersea – Delicious Food & Great Atmosphere

Ellie and I did some inline skating in Battersea Park a few weeks ago, and we decided to take the long route back via Nine Elms in order to check out the new sky pool at Embassy Gardens. This is when we stumbled across Wright Bros’ Battersea restaurant. So far we had only visited their Borough Market location. Three Locations, all in London Our Borough Market experience had been very pleasant, so we decided to give Wright Bros, Battersea, a shot. (They also have a restaurant in South Kensington.) We were seated on the lovely terrace with views of Battersea Power Station, the Thames, and the park-like embankment and piers with lots of vegetables, a fountain, more restaurants and shops, and a few food stalls. We sucked in the atmosphere while scrolling through the menu.   I know what you’re having Ms B laughed, “I know what you’re having” as […]

Our second visit to Beso, Covent Garden, now re-invented as Italian restaurant

Earlier this year, in January, to be precise, Ms B & I had been invited to check out the then still relatively new Beso in Covent Garden (review here) and we rated it 5 out of 5. The food back then had been labelled Moorish, basically a mix of Moroccan, Spanish, and other Mediterranean cuisines. There were distinctly Moorish design elements including an ornamental nine-seater table with traditional tiles. Recently I was on the way to a meeting in Covent Garden and passed by the restaurant. To my great surprise they had re-invented themselves as Italian Mediterranean restaurant and changed their interior decoration accordingly. When checking their menu I could see that these were not the only changes: the prices had gone up significantly too (their pre-theatre three-course ‘deal’ sets you back £24.95 and included no combination of even only vague interest to me).   After some deliberation I decided […]

Phat Phuc, Chelsea – Rather rude name, but buoi do they know how to cook up a lovely Pho

Ms B & I try to go to church every Sunday when we’re in London. (I’m not religious, but I like the people, their values, and the charity work.) We usually make our way to Holy Trinity Brompton by tube, then walk back home on a detour via King’s Road, often stopping for a quick bite along the way. Each and every time, we pass by Phat Phuc, a street food stall or hut with plenty of seating in a gazebo just opposite the stall’s front. It ranks #30 out of 1,650 quick bites in London on Tripadvisor and received a Certificate of Excellence. I remember us having lengthy conversations about the rude name (‘ph’ is pronounced ‘f’ in anglicised Vietnamese, as you probably know) and how awkward it must be for a chubby person to be the first one to arrive at the restaurant and then have to text […]

Bistro Mirey might be for you, if you love French breakfast with baked beans

UPDATE – Bistro Mirey permanently closed on 31st October 2019. We’ve just come back from a catch-up with good old friends, fellow food blogger Karen (The Veggie and I) and her husband at Bistro Mirey. Mirey is a Franco-Japanese bistro, which was opened in Fulham early last year by the professionally trained chef Gerald Mirey and former supper club originator Ko Ito. The restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside. It was empty when we arrived and slowly filled up to about one-third capacity while we were there. We liked the bright, friendly, relaxing vibes with a lot of wood. As a tall person, I have to say, that the legroom at all the tables is tiny (even though in some cases, you might be able to move the table away from the wall respectively the chairs away from the table). The service was very friendly, welcoming, and generally […]

Rick Stein Sandbanks – Delicious Seafood in a Great Atmosphere

During our recent visit to Sandbanks/Poole we enjoyed a lovely meal at Rick Stein Sandbanks. We had been to several of the dozen big and small places Christopher Richard Stein, CBE, owns in “Padstein” (i.e. Padstow in Cornwall). Our expectations were relatively manageable. But it turned out to be a very pleasant late lunch for a very reasonable price. Sandbanks is very expensive, local residents include several A-listers, formerly also the Beckhams. We ended up paying £54.30 for the two of us, including a bottle of sparkling water. We thoroughly enjoyed the casual, relaxed, friendly, bright, warm, stylish atmosphere and vibes of the main dining hall. It was very windy, so we were glad to be seated inside, even though on a calmer day the outside terrace would have been perfect. After short deliberation, Ms B opted for clams with XO sauce and fish & chips, I went for “fish […]
