Galvin at Windows – Our Restaurant Review

We’re just back from our visit to Chef Patron Chris Galvin‘s Michelin-starred Galvin at Windows, which boasts incredible 360 degree views of London from the 28th floor of the London Hilton on Park Lane. I should say “usually boasts”, because we picked the worst time to visit, considering that it was a dark, rainy, cloudy day, but the friends we met up with (two other couples) and us, we were still immediately bought in on the atmosphere. The interior décor combines modern elegance and state-of-the-art comfort with the glamour of the 1930s. Everyone I know hates 1960s architecture, and rightly so, but this true gem, which was completed in 1963, is one of the nicest buildings I’ve seen. It looks surprisingly modern from the outside, but the main selling point is its Y-shaped layout, which means you are always next to at least three window fronts. The fact that this […]

French Bistro Le Sacre Coeur, Angel

This afternoon, we were in the Angel area to check out the new Lie Lie Land graffiti by Bambi (more street art here and here), and thought, why not kill two birds with one stone and go back to that lovely French bistro ‘Le Sacre Coeur’, two French friends of ours had introduced us to, about a year ago (they are both regulars there, which, no doubt, is a good sign). We chose escargots (6 of them) and rabbit pate for starters, and Steak Frites and Fish of the Day (one salmon and one cod fillet) as our mains. We liked all the food and – as we […]

Bistro Pierre Victoire, Soho

We had waited until the very last minute this year to book something for Valentine’s Day dinner, because it had been unclear if we were both going to be in the country. We were then at first thinking about doing dinner at one of London’s top restaurants, but after further reflection we decided not to re-mortgage the flat and chose cheap, chirpy, and cheerful Pierre Victoire Bistro in Soho’s Dean Street, just off Soho Square and Tottenham Court Road tube station, ranking an impressive #250 out of 20,000 London restaurants on Tripadvisor, one of the very few restaurants that would still take bookings. The restaurant has been well-established as pre-theatre dinner venue for nearly 20 years and, we hear, is rarely seen with any significant number of empty seats. There certainly weren’t any (except for ours) when we arrived. The atmosphere in the tube-like, busy, crammed, traditionally decorated dining room […]
