Brunch at Foxlow – our Restaurant Review

UPDATE 17.01.2020 – ALL REMAINING FOXLOW RESTAURANTS, INCLUDING THE ONE IN SOHO, HAVE NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED. We have just returned from our brunch at Foxlow in Soho. There are two sister outlets at equally trendy Balham and Clerkenwell. Foxlow has been founded by the same good folks that brought us Hawksmoor (with 6 outlets in London and 1 in Manchester). We had recently been blown away by a visit to their branch in Air Street, no more than 5 minutes walk away. Some of the best steak we’ve had at a very reasonable price in a great environment with quick, friendly, professional service (highly recommend!).    We had also looked at a recent article in the Evening Standard (I’m saying ‘recent’, but they are of course known to repost old articles without any new research; some ‘recent’ articles recommend restaurants that have closed down months ago) by accident, which listed […]

Rowley’s Restaurant, St James’s, a Must for Steaklovers

We have just returned from our lunch at Rowley’s in famous Jermyn Street in London’s poshest part of town: St. James’s. (I know what you’re thinking, we were shocked too when we found out many years ago, but Berkeley Square’s Mayfair is only the second best part of town, well, never mind.) It wasn’t our first visit and it certainly won’t be our last. We love this restaurant that could very well be London’s finest steak house. For over forty years, steaklovers from all over town and from far beyond have come to this elegant temple of carnivorous pleasures and a good many of them will have enjoyed the same signature dish we had today (and have every time we visit): a very large portion of chateaubriand steak with herb Roquefort and butter sauce and unlimited French fries.    As usual we took advantage of the great offers that are […]

Galvin at the Athenaeum – Fine Dining in Style

We were recently very kindly invited by family-owned 5-star luxury hotel Athenaeum, whose list of current and former regulars includes Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford, and Kim Kardashian, to try (for free) the fixed price £37.50 three-course deal (which includes unlimited dessert) at their restaurant Galvin at the Athenaeum , an offer we could not refuse, having previously heard many good things about this fine restaurant. The location on Piccadilly close to Hyde Park Corner, in a building previously owned by the famous Athenaeum private members club, which moved into nearby Pall Mall (and which has 52 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former members), could not be better, and the old building has been perfectly refurbished with state of the art technology and plenty of original artwork everywhere. Galvin at The Athenaeum is under the supervision of Michelin-starred chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin. The two brothers, who […]

Fera, Claridge’s – Fine Dining in Mayfair

We have just returned from our lunch at Michelin-starred Fera at Claridge’s , whose kitchen has been headed by Australian chef Matt Starling since February 2017. Fera focuses on British cuisine. We had been having meals at Claridge’s in the past, when it was called “Gordon Ramsey at Claridge’s” and when it was labelled London’s most overpriced, overrated restaurant. However, Ms B, my wife, found out that instead of charging you £300+ for a meal for two with wine, like in the olden days, there was now a surprisingly acceptable lunch deal on offer: three courses and a glass of champagne or gin and tonic for £42 per person. For an additional £10 you can add their signature snacks (we didn’t, because we weren’t that hungry). There is an undeniable wow effect when you enter the dining room through a curtain-lined entrance which leads to a rotunda, where the room […]

The Yellow House, Bermondsey – our Review

We’ve just returned from our visit to The Yellow House Bar & Kitchen in Surrey Quays, South London (close to Bermondsey and Tower Bridge), ten minutes walk from Canada Water tube station across the gigantic car park. We typically would not have ventured so far off the beaten track (the only other reasons why we get out at Canada Water tube station is to visit Café East or to go shopping for travel and sports gear at the gigantic Decathlon super-store. We don’t mind the area, but Bermondsey, Tower Bridge, and London Bridge/Borough Market areas simply feel much more appealing and there are a few rough social housing estates not too far away from the many newly-built, pleasant residential buildings.    What brought us here then? The Barbarians and two of our friends were invited to check out an escape room experience nearby and felt like we should probably have […]
