We have just returned from our lunch at Rowley’s in famous Jermyn Street in London’s poshest part of town: St. James’s. (I know what you’re thinking, we were shocked too when we found out many years ago, but Berkeley Square’s Mayfair is only the second best part of town, well, never mind.) It wasn’t our first visit and it certainly won’t be our last. We love this restaurant that could very well be London’s finest steak house. For over forty years, steaklovers from all over town and from far beyond have come to this elegant temple of carnivorous pleasures and a good many of them will have enjoyed the same signature dish we had today (and have every time we visit): a very large portion of chateaubriand steak with herb Roquefort and butter sauce and unlimited French fries. As usual we took advantage of the great offers that are […]
Natural Kitchen, City – our Restaurant Review
We’ve just returned from our quick after-work dinner visit to the Natural Kitchen, which opened relatively recently in the City. (They’ve got 8 other outlets spread all over town.) We normally avoid chains, but the big sign advertising £10 off the price for steaks on Mondays and Tuesdays, grabbed our attention, so we gave it a shot. The friendly waiter led us to our table. We enjoyed the warm atmosphere which combines rustic wood elements with modern glass, steel, and a lot of light. Nothing too special, but very pleasant. Ms B opted for a cheese burger (£11.50), I went for the flat iron steak and chips (£15 instead of £25). Feeling a bit naughty, we also made use of the 2-for-1 cocktail deal and ordered two ‘gin gin mules’ (£9.50 instead of £19 total). The burger was very juicy and just right. Not among the best we’ve had, […]
Michelin-Starred Restaurant Benoit, Paris – our Review
We have recently returned from a visit at Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred Benoit. The master himself said about this beautiful gem, that celebrated its 100th anniversary a few years ago: “There’s no other place as typically Parisian as Benoit. I have a very special affection for this beautiful house, with its own history and generosity. Benoit is a friendly place, full of memories and shared pleasure. It reflects a certain way of life and tradition that we want to preserve.” The restaurant has a lovely, perhaps slightly stuffy vibe about it. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout. We both opted for the three-course set menu deal for €39. As starters we chose cauliflower veloute, croutons, as well as a warm potato salad with smoked haddock. For mains we picked trout ‘a la meuniere’ with spinach, and lamb navarin with seasonal vegetables. As desserts we went for Armagnac savarin with […]
Cafe Boheme, Soho – our Review
We’ve recently visited Café Boheme in Soho for the first time, for brunch. There had been a fair bit of hype around this place over the years, so our expectations were high. We were immediately taken in by the pleasant, warm, very French café atmosphere. Service was perhaps a bit abrupt and not overly helpful, but hey, that is very Parisian, probably a good thing! We ordered the obligatory Eggs Royale (£9), ham and cheese omelette (£7), and a dish which now seems to have dropped off the online menu, but which contained pastry, strawberries, and cream for roughly £6. Besides, we ordered one flat white and one latte (each £2.80), one freshly squeezed orange juice (£3.90), and one Bloody Mary to share (£9.75) I was pleased with my Eggs Royale, they were just right and nice and runny. Ms B seemed equally happy with her omelette, which […]
L’Ange 20, Paris – our Restaurant Review
L’Ange 20 had been recommended to us by friends, and what a great recommendation that was! It also came in very handy that it is located 5 minutes walk from where we were staying this time around, close to Place des Vosges in the beautiful Marais district of perhaps the planet’s most magnificent city: Paree (read our blog post about the Marais here). We were immediately taken in by the pleasant atmosphere which combined warm colours of a traditional Parisian corner bistrot with modern elements. The waiter was marvellous and led us through the menu, throwing in a few jokes and witty remarks that made us laugh. We followed his recommendation and went for king prawns in angel hair pasta with homemade guacamole (£9) as starters, grilled duck breast with green pepper and eggplant parmigiana (£20), as well as seared cod fillet, vegetable julienne, black rice with ginger […]
