Cambridge Food Tour – So Much More to this Town than Just Books

During one of our recent visits to Cambridge, Gerla from Cambridge Food Tour very kindly invited us to join one of her multi-award winning Taste Cambridge Tours (usually £65 per person). Gerla is a fellow food & travel blogger, and she is very serious about it, spending a large part of the year travelling the world and sampling food. Finally Made it to London’s Most Famous Chinese – A. Wong

We had heard good things about Michelin-starred A. Wong for years, but somehow never managed to visit, even though it’s just half an hour’s walk from where we live. Earlier this month, we finally made it, and what a feast it was! The restaurant was founded in 2013 by Andrew Wong, then a young graduate with an anthropology degree from LSE, when he took over a non-descript Chinese local next to Victoria station from his father. For several months before that point in time, he had travelled mainland China and explored the many different cuisines and cooking styles. In late 2018 he’ll open another, much bigger and more casual restaurant at the Bloomberg Arcade in the City. Applebee’s Fish Restaurant – One of the Best in Town

We’ve just returned from our first ‘proper’ visit to Applebee’s restaurant at Borough Market (previously we had only purchased fresh fish to prepare at home). We’ve always liked the friendly, pleasant vibe of the place and the truly amazing quality of the produce. We got seated outside on the pedestrianised street. After short deliberation Ms B opted for fillet of sea bass with crushed new potatoes, bacon, and an olive oil velouté (£23.50) and I went for the mixed grill (£22.45), a selection of the catch of the day served with three dips and a rocket and tomato salad), plus an extra side of chips (£4). Galvin at the Athenaeum – Fine Dining in Style

We were recently very kindly invited by family-owned 5-star luxury hotel Athenaeum, whose list of current and former regulars includes Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford, and Kim Kardashian, to try (for free) the fixed price £37.50 three-course deal (which includes unlimited dessert) at their restaurant Galvin at the Athenaeum , an offer we could not refuse, having previously heard many good things about this fine restaurant. The location on Piccadilly close to Hyde Park Corner, in a building previously owned by the famous Athenaeum private members club, which moved into nearby Pall Mall (and which has 52 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former members), could not be better, and the old building has been perfectly refurbished with state of the art technology and plenty of original artwork everywhere. The Yellow House, Bermondsey – our Review

We’ve just returned from our visit to The Yellow House Bar & Kitchen in Surrey Quays, South London (close to Bermondsey and Tower Bridge), ten minutes walk from Canada Water tube station across the gigantic car park. We typically would not have ventured so far off the beaten track (the only other reasons why we get out at Canada Water tube station is to visit Café East or to go shopping for travel and sports gear at the gigantic Decathlon super-store. We don’t mind the area, but Bermondsey, Tower Bridge, and London Bridge/Borough Market areas simply feel much more appealing and there are a few rough social housing estates not too far away from the many newly-built, pleasant residential buildings.
