During our recent stay at the fabulous Hotel Schloss Moenchstein in Salzburg, we had dinner at the hotel’s own Michelin-starred restaurant, The Glass Garden. Apart from the prestigious star, the hotel received an impressive rating of 17/20 from Gault Millau. The restaurant is small, with space for a maximum of 40 guests. A huge glass sculpture by one of our favourite artists, Chihuly, dominates the dining room. There are floor to ceiling windows throughout, with magnificent views over town and the other nearby hills. Part of the restaurant is covered by the stunning L-shaped, hose-like glass and steel structure, which also covers some of the outdoor seating area of the hotel (not The Glass House, which does not have outdoor seating) and the very stylish Apollo Bar. NEW CHEF AT THE GLASS GARDEN RESTAURANT SALZBURG 32-year old chef Simon Wagner, who became a father a few months ago, previously […]
Imlauer Sky Bar & Restaurant, Salzburg
In Salzburg, a town known for Mozart, marvellous mountains, medieval manors, and maybe mostly: amazing meals, it’s no small feat to stand out on the culinary scene, but Imlauer Sky Bar & Restaurant does just that. And in style. SALT FORTRESS ON THE SALT RIVER My home town Burghausen (check out this post) is only 20 minutes away by car on the Bavarian side of the river Salzach (“salt river”), which also flows through Salzburg (“salt fortress”). I’ve spent a year with the German mountain troops in Berchtesgaden, a stone’s throw away. So I can’t count the times I’ve been to this beautiful town of just over 150,000 residents, which – you guessed it – made its fortune by charging exorbitant tolls on the salt from the nearby salt mines that was passing through it on the river. IMLAUER SKY BAR & RESTAURANT IS HIGHLY RANKED Ellie and I […]
Strobl Stuberl, Salzburg – our Review
Open until 4am on weekends, Strobl Stuberl is one of the local institutions, the blood that runs through the veins of Salzburg. The atmosphere is warm and friendly with a lot of wood, but also a bit 1970s country pub, male-dominated and smoky (they permit smoking indoors). I was not immediately taken in, but the friendly waitress made me feel at home right away. It was 1am and we had just arrived at our nearby hotel. Ms B was too tired to eat, but I certainly felt like having a bite. The taxi driver on the way from the airport had recommended this place and it was not hard to find, just a stone’s throw away from where we were staying. I studied the menu for a long while. It’s a really good mix of local traditional full-scale dishes, snacks like sausage in a bun, and even some more sophisticated […]
