Ms B and I have started doing yoga sessions in Vauxhall on Saturday mornings at 11:45am, and last time around we had the brilliant idea to have a ‘small’ breakfast before the hard work, so we returned to Brunswick House for the first time in five years. The high-ceilinged, stately 18th Century building is beautifully decorated inside with lots of chandeliers, a toy airplane, and other items dangling from above, mirrors, paintings, maps and the like on the walls, and a large bar. The main hall is separated into the casual area where we had breakfast and the main part which is reserved for the other two meals of the day, and which is separated through a massive wooden divider. The staff immediately made us feel at home and quickly took our orders. All our good intentions of just grabbing a quick, small bite were gone by the time we […]
Brunch at Foxlow – our Restaurant Review
UPDATE 17.01.2020 – ALL REMAINING FOXLOW RESTAURANTS, INCLUDING THE ONE IN SOHO, HAVE NOW PERMANENTLY CLOSED. We have just returned from our brunch at Foxlow in Soho. There are two sister outlets at equally trendy Balham and Clerkenwell. Foxlow has been founded by the same good folks that brought us Hawksmoor (with 6 outlets in London and 1 in Manchester). We had recently been blown away by a visit to their branch in Air Street, no more than 5 minutes walk away. Some of the best steak we’ve had at a very reasonable price in a great environment with quick, friendly, professional service (highly recommend!). We had also looked at a recent article in the Evening Standard (I’m saying ‘recent’, but they are of course known to repost old articles without any new research; some ‘recent’ articles recommend restaurants that have closed down months ago) by accident, which listed […]
Berners Tavern for Brunch, our Review
We’ve just come back from one of our best brunch experiences in London or anywhere else. Berners Tavern is located in Fitzrovia and supervised by Michelin-starred chef Jason Atherton of Pollen Street Social fame, and Phil Carmichael, who had previously worked under Atherton and earned a Michelin star for Gordon Ramsay‘s (who won 16 stars in total for his restaurants) Maze in Prague. Fitzrovia was up-and-coming some eight or ten years ago, but now seems to be on its way to become one of the hottest parts of town. We’ve even loved this area when there was little more to it then Charlotte Street and a few great clubs like the 100 Club, but lately we’ve been going there more and more often, enjoyed brunch at Lima or dinner at Hakkasan (both Michelin-starred), breakfast at the lovely Lantana, or a gorgeous plate of seafood at the outstanding Bonnie Gull. After […]
Review: Rail House Cafe, Victoria
We had previously visited the Rail House Café’s much talked-about sister Riding House Café in Fitzrovia and had not been overly impressed (our review here). Visiting the newly opened Rail House Café in London Victoria seemed like a chore at first, but turned out to be an absolutely brilliant week-day brunch experience (consider our Update at the end of this article though). I ordered their signature Burgerdict (burger Benedict) and steak tartare. Both dishes were prepared to perfection. The Burger with egg Benedict on top was among the tastiest burgers I have had in years. The steak tartare was incredibly delicious too, with the wasabi paste that came with it. Like all the best steak tartares it wasn’t made of minced meat, but of little short strips of raw beef, that had just the right texture. Not least of all, the service was very quick, professional, and friendly, and […]
Brunch at Timmy Green, Victoria
UPDATE 17.08.2019 – AFTER ANOTHER VISIT TODAY WE NO LONGER RECOMMEND THIS VENUE. THE FOOD WAS AT BEST MEDIOCRE. We’ve just come back from Brunch at Timmy Green Victoria, in Nova Food district, a further Daisy Green outlet (the remaining two besides the homonymous flagship outlet and Timmy Green being Beany Green and Peggy Green), aimed at bringing a flair of Bondi and Coogee to Old Blightey. We had just completed a 10k run for charity earlier today and felt rather peckish, so decided to go for three main courses: their ‘Bondi’ breakfast plate, basically a Full English with half an avocado and house-made chilli pesto added on a great-looking and great-tasting two slices of charcoal bread, soft sourdough bread – if we understood correctly – coloured in black with organic colouring, and baked in a charcoal oven with plenty of fine ash still clinging to the crust. […]
