I know, they’re not an airline, so why book a flight with them, right? It sounds like a strange recommendation. You wouldn’t go to a butcher to get heart surgery, you wouldn’t get your car fixed at a used bicycle store, you wouldn’t buy sashimi from a street stall in a rough neighbourhood in Bangkok (it’s not even Japan!). All true. But first of all, you are, of course, very unlikely to actually fly with them, if you book a ticket, saving you a whole ton of money, because you’re likely to spend significantly less, if you’re at home writing complaints. And second of all, in the unlikely event you do fly, there are plenty of benefits which you probably haven’t thought of. KLM will keep you slim. You’re the type who eats spilled hot chilli from the floor of some honky-tonk in Tijuana, just to win a bet? Try […]
Lock’d, London – Escape Room Experience
Lock’d invited Ms B, me, and two of our friends today to try out one of their escape room experiences. I have to admit that I mainly went along, because Ms B and her friends were absolutely convinced that escape rooms are brilliant. My 30th birthday is quite a few years back, I consider myself a pretty level-headed person, and I’m not a natural when it comes to being locked up with other people in a room in a stress situation, having to solve a puzzle within 60 minutes in order to be allowed back to join the living out there. I watch Sherlock Holmes movies to be distracted, to switch my mind off, to loosely ponder how someone with a funny face like Cumberbatch managed to become a world-famous actor and hottie with the ladies, and to relax, not to help the detective solve his crimes (I’m not a […]
Moriki – Japanese in Frankfurt – our Restaurant Review
I tried out Frankfurt’s posh Japanese (on the ground floor of the Deutsche Bank towers) today. They have a lunch deal for €19 which includes miso soup, beef skewer, and a side salad with rice. I arrived at Moriki just before noon, so was among the first few guests on the vast premises. The space is pleasantly lit, warm wooden colours mixed with a few glass and steel designer elements and some art. Service was friendly and quick. I was seated next to the sushi bar, where I could watch the staff prepare sashimi. It happens only rarely that a miso soup makes you go wow, especially with some of the chains like Pret having consistently worked for years to bring the standard down. However, this was a fine specimen of a miso soup, thick and full of flavour, with little bits floating around in it. I also enjoyed […]
Michelin-Starred Restaurant Benoit, Paris – our Review
We have recently returned from a visit at Alain Ducasse’s Michelin-starred Benoit. The master himself said about this beautiful gem, that celebrated its 100th anniversary a few years ago: “There’s no other place as typically Parisian as Benoit. I have a very special affection for this beautiful house, with its own history and generosity. Benoit is a friendly place, full of memories and shared pleasure. It reflects a certain way of life and tradition that we want to preserve.” The restaurant has a lovely, perhaps slightly stuffy vibe about it. Service was very attentive and friendly throughout. We both opted for the three-course set menu deal for €39. As starters we chose cauliflower veloute, croutons, as well as a warm potato salad with smoked haddock. For mains we picked trout ‘a la meuniere’ with spinach, and lamb navarin with seasonal vegetables. As desserts we went for Armagnac savarin with […]
L’Ange 20, Paris – our Restaurant Review
L’Ange 20 had been recommended to us by friends, and what a great recommendation that was! It also came in very handy that it is located 5 minutes walk from where we were staying this time around, close to Place des Vosges in the beautiful Marais district of perhaps the planet’s most magnificent city: Paree (read our blog post about the Marais here). We were immediately taken in by the pleasant atmosphere which combined warm colours of a traditional Parisian corner bistrot with modern elements. The waiter was marvellous and led us through the menu, throwing in a few jokes and witty remarks that made us laugh. We followed his recommendation and went for king prawns in angel hair pasta with homemade guacamole (£9) as starters, grilled duck breast with green pepper and eggplant parmigiana (£20), as well as seared cod fillet, vegetable julienne, black rice with ginger […]
