My Bavarian home town’s newspaper, Burghauser Anzeiger, has published an article about the expedition and about me taking part in it. Very good of them. I really can’t thank the newspaper’s editor, Ms Richter, enough for taking the time to meet me for a chat ten days ago, when I visited Burghausen, and for writing this lovely article. Mainkai Café, Frankfurt – Great value meals with a view of the Main

Ranking roughly #20 out of 2,000 Frankfurt restaurants on Tripadvisor (including a Certificate of Excellence until 2018), Mainkai Café had been recommended to me on various occasions. So I was very pleased, when I was invited to bring a friend and check out their food. Located next to Frankfurt’s beautifully re-built Old Town on the riverbank of the Main, the big windows of the tiny Café offer good views. My friend had already arrived when I rocked up a few minutes late. The interior is basic but friendly. After short deliberation my buddy went for kofta with couscous and salad (€11.90) while I ordered venison goulash with Schupfnudeln (a type of freshly made thick noodles made of potatoes, flour and eggs), red cabbage, and cranberry jam (€14.50). Burghausen Burgfest Castle Festival – 3 Days of Rock’n’Roll in my Home Town

Whenever Ms B and I get a chance, we like to do Burgfest (‘Castle Festival’) in my initial home town of Burghausen, Bavaria. I grew up there and only left when I was 19. My parents still live here in the same house I grew up in. It is 1.5 hours’ drive (2.5 hours by train, 2 interchanges) from Munich airport and 45mins drive (3.25 hours [sic] by train via Germany, 3 interchanges, busses infrequent; another option is bus to central station, then train from there to Ostermiething, all on Austrian side, only 1 interchange, then taxi from there; takes 1h45m) from Salzburg airport. This little town of just 18,000 residents boasts the world’s longest castle (unless you count the fortified garden fence our Chinese friends built) at just over 1,050 metres in length. Our favourite Munich haunt – Ratskeller

I have been to Ratskeller at least 20 times, and Ms B has joined me on about 5 occasions. We absolutely love everything about this place, the building and rustic interior decor, the slightly overconfident, grumpy but never malicious waiters, the location in the heart of Munich, and – most of all, of course – the fabulous food! On our recent trip to my home town Burghausen we gladly took the opportunity to pay this true cornerstone of Bavarian cuisine another visit. Moriki – Japanese in Frankfurt – our Restaurant Review

I tried out Frankfurt’s posh Japanese (on the ground floor of the Deutsche Bank towers) today. They have a lunch deal for €19 which includes miso soup, beef skewer, and a side salad with rice. I arrived at Moriki just before noon, so was among the first few guests on the vast premises. The space is pleasantly lit, warm wooden colours mixed with a few glass and steel designer elements and some art. Service was friendly and quick. I was seated next to the sushi bar, where I could watch the staff prepare sashimi.    It happens only rarely that a miso soup makes you go wow, especially with some of the chains like Pret having consistently worked for years to bring the standard down.
