The post can still be found using the original URL, as it will redirect]. It was our last day on our safari with KLM Safaris and we wanted to enjoy every minute. We got up early at 6am, had a quick breakfast, and got ready to see the Ngorongoro. DESCENDING INTO A DIFFERENT WORLD: THE CRATER We caught up with the rest of our group and jumped into the jeep. An hour on the road we were on our way down to the caldera from the ‘crater rim’, 600m down from 2,400m to 1,800m. Going down that steep, winding road is an amazing experience. You almost feel like you are descending into a different world, an ancient […]

Tanzania Safari with KLM Safaris: Day 2 – Serengeti [UPDATED]

[This blog post has recently been updated. It was re-posted with today’s date because of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) issues with the original post, that had been the result of a technical glitch. The post can still be found using the original URL, as it will redirect]. At 6am, our alarm clock went off, and we were excited for our day with KLM Safaris. We felt well-rested. In essence, after our attempt at Kilimanjaro’s summit, the last day had been a walk in the park. Because of all the dangerous animals around you, there are very few occasions when you leave the jeep and go for a stroll. Most of the time, we had just sat on the seats, or stood (with our shoes off) on the seats, or (with our shoes on) on the jeep’s passenger cabin’s floor. BREAKFAST As expected, breakfast was delicious. When we had finished, Jim […]

[This blog post has recently been updated. It was re-posted with today’s date because of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) issues with the original post, that had been the result of a technical glitch. The post can still be found using the original URL, as it will redirect]. We went on a 2.5-day safari with KLM Safaris from late August to early September in 2022. KLM Safaris, a small but highly successful, family-run tour operator, had very kindly invited Ellie on the 2.5-day trip. Like any good husband, I tagged along. NIGHT IN ARUSHA We spent the night before the start of the safari in Arusha. Arusha is the starting point for many Tanzanian safaris, as well as the base town for Kilimanjaro climbs. PICK-UP FROM ARUSHA HOTEL The first day started very early for us, with pick-up from our hotel in Arusha at 4am. We dropped off most of our […]

Zagora, Sahara desert experience with Camel Safaries

On our recent trip to Marrakech, Ali, the owner of Camel Safaries, offered that we could check out his brilliant Sahara desert camp and camel ride experience, which is part of his two-day Sahara tour (most of his tours are 3 or more days, we just did not have the time). For more about the whole tour, see our blog post here. The camel ride and overnight bivouac in the Sahara desert were the absolute highlight of our trip. We wouldn’t want to have missed it for the world, it was so much fun!    We arrived just outside the desert town of Zagora at 6:30pm (we heard that, especially in winter with its shorter days, it’s imperative for travellers to listen to their guides and be swift at some of the stop-overs along the journey from Marrakesh to Zagora as they will miss the camel ride altogether if they […]

Two-day tour to the Sahara with Camel Safaries

During our visit to Marrakech we received an invite from Ali, the owner of Camel Safaries, to check out their two-day camel safari tour. Ali’s business ranks #12 of 758 tours in Marrakech on Tripadvisor, and the Zagora, Sahara desert experience was just what we were hoping for!    Tizi n’Tichka Pass Abdoul, our driver and guide, picked us up from our riad in Marrakech at 8:30am in a spacious and comfortable 4WD SUV.    We took the Tizi n’Tichka route. This road is Morocco’s highest mountain pass and reaches 2,260m at its peak, with snow-covered mountains topping 4,000m within view. On the other side, the road descends to the town of Ouarzazate (the name means ‘it’s ok’/’you’re welcome’), which is the gateway to the Sahara from Marrakech. The 350km journey took about 7 hours (pure driving time, not counting breaks).    The roads on our journey were much better […]
