Brunch at Dean Street Townhouse – our Review

We’ve just returned from our brunch at the Dean Street Townhouse. It’s been our second time there, and again we had a great time.

Service was quick and friendly and managed to find us a table outside even though we hadn’t mentioned anything when we made the reservation. After studying the menu for a while, we decided to order smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (£13.50), kedgeree (£10), and grilled Manx kippers with butter (£9.50).

Only having become Brits some three years ago, neither Ms B nor I had come across kedgeree until two months ago, when a friend ordered it during a brunch out, also in Soho. Kedgeree, it turns out, is a dish from Victorian colonial times, consisting of fish flakes (usually smoked haddock), eggs, and boiled rice with curry powder. Besides, we ordered a bloody mary to share (£10), a pink grapefruit juice (£4), a turmeric latte (£4), and a flat white (£4).

Everything arrived quickly, looked beautiful, and came in rather large portions (a very good thing in our book!). My first attempt at kedgeree was a huge success. I will definitely order this dish again. The scrambled ‘Burford Browns’ eggs from the Cotswolds had a perfect texture and great taste. The kippers were fabulous, just the way we like them, proper charcoaly fins and heads. I often have my coffee at home with turmeric, so the turmeric latte unsurprisingly hit the spot. The pink grapefruit juice was nice and sweet, not too bitter or acidic, and the bloody mary was extremely spicy and potent, much to our liking.

We enjoyed doing some people-watching and were pleased that the sunshades were protecting us from the sun. We’ll be back soon. 4.5 out of 5 in our book.

    1. Cheers, Richard. Oh, I’m sure you’d love kedgeree and Dean Street Town House as much as we did. Ellie’s really into turmeric lattes too, btw… I’ve always used a lot of turmeric in my cooking. Whenever I do a chili con carne I have to buy a new bag of ground turmeric afterwards haha…
